Giovanni was designed with many parameters driven by suggestions by both Giovanni Test Drive beta testers and international industry standards considerations. The current application is readily portable for incorporation of other CODECs that may be developed by third parties, as well as its use of keys and conditional access schemes which may be thought of as distributing the security of the application to a separate file.
Unlike other watermarking applications as originally proposed and developed, there is no need for the original unwatermarked content to detect or decode messages in the watermarked file. As well, the unique layered architecture ensures better maintenence of rights that are represented by the data that is encoded in separate layers, in certain deployments. In Giovanni "terms", other watermarking applications separate rights by including data in the same layer which are encoded in the same signalling band in a digitized sample stream. What is readily apparent is the need for Giovanni's proprietary use of message delimiters and the inclusion of "hashing" these delimiters to make them indisputably unique, by cryptographic standards. Robust hashing of the content for tamper-proofing the watermarked content was built into the underlying architecture.
We believe the open-ended hooks of Giovanni make possible to incorporate almost any watermarking CODEC. In fact, dozens of different CODECs reflecting different client needs have been successfully and reliably deployed. Giovanni is actually a superset of other currently available watermarking applications by virtue of proprietary intellectual property. The invaluable difference is the use of the keys to perform both encode, detection and decode operations. With the varying nature of processing media signals, Giovanni has proven invaluable in incorporating multiple CODECs under any number of deployment scenarios.
